I suppose I’ve truly lost her. It’s been a week with no answer to my texts or calls. She’s avoiding me. I must have done something that scared her away. Part of me thinks that’s a good thing. But my heart aches at the loss of her, and I contemplate leaving Tucson, thinking perhaps I should go overseas.

Still, I came to Tucson for a reason, and I did pay six months in advance on the house. Maybe over time, I’ll get over her.

Yes, just keep telling yourself that lie. I shake my head ruefully as I head for her work to check on her. I just need to know that she’s all right, then I will let her go. Let her live her life in peace. Without me.

I pull into her work and park next to her Blazer. I study the parking lot, checking out the different cars, and then realize I can’t just walk into the clinic and ask for her. No, I’ll have to just wait till she gets off work to check on her. I back out of the parking space and pull back onto the street. I turn into the lot next door and settle in to wait.

Three hours later, she emerges. She looks exhausted and paranoid. I want to go to her, find out what has her so worried, but I don’t. Instead, I wait for her to get in her Blazer and pull out of the lot. I follow her to her apartment complex and park on the street as she gets out of her vehicle and heads toward the building.

Giving her one last chance, I dial her number, but the call is quickly canceled, and I know she declined my call. Feeling defeated, I drive home.

Maybe in a few hundred years, I’ll find another perfect woman for me. But the feel of Carolyn beneath me, the touch of her hand in mine, will haunt me for a lifetime.
